Wildfire incident reporting training for a national electric utility

ATCO Electric · 6,000+ employees · Alberta, Canada
01
Background
ATCO Electric delivers power across 245,000 square kilometers of northern and central Alberta, with field crews regularly responding to wildfire incidents near power infrastructure. The company needed consistent, investigation-ready documentation from every first responder — but reporting quality varied widely.
02
The challenge
Wildfire reports submitted through ATCO’s proprietary For Site app ranged from thorough to incomplete. Some responders documented scenes with precision — detailed descriptions, clear photos, annotated sketches. Others submitted vague summaries and poorly framed images that left investigators without the data to determine root cause. With government authorities relying on these initial reports, inconsistent documentation was becoming a regulatory risk.
03
Our approach
Starting from ATCO’s SME-provided wildfire investigation protocols, we designed a fully interactive course. The module walks responders through the complete reporting workflow — scene observation, cause determination, photo documentation, site sketching, and For Site app reporting. Each section uses video scenarios built from actual field incidents, with assessments that challenge responders to evaluate real employee submissions and identify what makes a report investigation-ready.

Key takeaway

When your field data feeds government investigations, vague reporting isn’t just an internal gap — it’s a regulatory risk. Structured training turns inconsistent documentation into reliable evidence.
