Interactive fire re-entry training for naval personnel

European naval defense branch · National Armed Forces · 1,000+ personnel · Western Europe
01
Background
A European naval defense branch operating across thousands of square miles of Atlantic waters requires every crew member to complete shipboard firefighting and damage control training before deploying at sea.
02
The challenge
Fire re-entry is among the highest-risk procedures a naval crew faces. Live drills at the National Maritime College of Ireland were effective but costly and infrequent. Between drills, personnel had no way to practice the split-second decisions that determine outcomes in a shipboard fire — which hose to charge, when to apply foam, whether to check the door or activate the water wall. Training was either live or nothing.
03
Our approach
Using the client’s SME-provided procedures and filmed training footage, we created a fully interactive branching module. The module walks the learner through a complete fire re-entry sequence — from hose preparation and nozzle safety through entry approach, foam deployment, and crew coordination. At each stage, the learner faces the same judgment calls they’d encounter in a live burn — and each choice triggers real video footage showing the consequence, whether correct execution or visible failure. Personalized performance reports track decision accuracy so instructors identify gaps before the next scheduled drill.

Key takeaway

When live training is essential but can’t happen often enough, interactive video scenarios fill the gap — building decision-making confidence between drills, not just during them.
